Artificial intelligence could threaten 300 million jobs worldwide, GMB Congress hears
AI is a scary world when you hear that 300 million of us could be phased out of work within a couple of years across the globe.
GMB Congress today heard that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a threat to jobs and must be regulated, with workers and unions integral to the discussions and consultation before implementation.
Jobs are already being lost because of AI generative and surveillance technology in the workplace.
Government must ensure that AI is not at the expense of jobs, and must not be used as a threat to drive down the pay and conditions of workers.
Andrian Stohr, GMB London Region Delegate said:
“We need to put in place regulating standards so workers will not be put on the scrap heap.
“AI is a scary world when you hear that 300 million of us could be phased out of work within a couple of years.
“GMB Union supports this call for robust regulation of AI in the workplace.
“We're encouraged by the progress on the draft AI Employment Bill, and believe unions like the GMB must be at the forefront of discussions alongside the TUC's AI manifesto produced by the working group engaged in its creation, including GMB.
“By working together, we can ensure AI is implemented responsibly, protecting jobs and ensuring it uplifts working conditions, not undermines them.”
